Here at Lympo, we believe that being active is the way we all are meant to be. Sometimes we just need a little push, a bit of a challenge (you do like those challenges, don’t you?) and a healthy reward.

Today we would like to offer you to reward yourselves a bit differently — with a good book about a thing we all love (and to be honest, sometimes hate a little bit) — running.

So we looked into the book section under running and got a list of 5 amazing books that runners absolutely love.

Here it comes, folks! SPOILER ALERT: a long but interesting read.

1. Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall

Absolute classic. An epic adventure that started with a very simple question “Why does my foot hurt?” It takes you deep down into the life of North American tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and allows you to learn their secrets.

A book that will not stimulate your mind but will also inspire your body for great achievements.

It has inspired many individuals to take up running:

“<…> After starting this book I started to run regularly and I even got into the habit of reading a chapter right before I hit the trails each day. It really does a great job of filling you with the feeling that humans are meant to run, and that running fills you with a joy that you cannot find elsewhere…” Full review.

2. Running Away by Robert Andrew Powell

Have you ever been jokingly asked what are you running away from while going for a jog? But really, what does drive people to take up running and running to such extreme levels as participating in Ironman triathlons or regular triathlons not to mention good old marathons?

In Running Away journalist Robert Andrew documents his way into the sport and uncovers underlying reasons behind that way.

This is what readers think of the book:

“Out of the dozen or so books I’ve read about people pursuing the Ironman, an ultra marathon, or some other high physical achievement, I have to say that I enjoyed this book the most. The author writes in a manner which puts questions in your head, which he later answers with a story of a memory…” Full review.

3. Racing Weight Quick Start Guide: A 4-Week Weight-Loss Plan for Endurance Athletes by Matt Fitzgerald

Matt Fitzgerald is a sports nutritionist that offers a comprehensive approach to weight management for endurance athletes.

His approach is science-based and offers safe and healthy 5-step plan to get into your to your best LEAN body.

People are enjoying a book’s simple yet effective structure:

“It’s crazy to review such a logical plan and then say, well, it’s logical. But it is. The thing I love about the RW QuickStart is the easy step-by-step approach. I also love the fact that I am now able to eat, which is a real relief.” Full review.

4. Run Fast. Eat Slow.: Nourishing Recipes for Athletes: A Cookbook by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky

We all do love to have a good bite after a great run. A world world-class marathoner and Olympian Shalane Flanagan and a chef Elyse Kopecky write a great book where food can be wholesome, flavor-forward and nourishing at the very same time.

Definitely the tastiest from the list! Be careful! it is changing readers’ lives in a very delicious and healthy way:

“This book has had a huge impact on my life. It has given me confidence in the kitchen and helped me become a healthier individual…” Full review.

5. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running: A Memoir by Haruki Murakami

Haruki Murakami was named as world’s greatest living novelists by The Guardian. However, at the same time, he is an avid runner that completed numerous marathons and triathlons.

Murakami offers a rather philosophical memoir on how running influenced his life, his personality, and his work. Eureka moments, greatest triumphs and disappointments — the book has it all. Personal and intimate.

Runners all over the world are relating to the writings of Murakami:

“I almost could have written this book… if I were as talented a writer as Mr. Murakami, of course. As a runner, I related to this book very much, often finding myself nodding or chuckling to myself because I totally understand what the author is talking about as he talks (writes) about running and his experience in participating in the sport over many years” Full review.

We hope that you enjoy the books we recommend! Most of them are also available in audiobooks, making them great companions for long runs.
